Fill a Suitcase to Build a Library (Part 2)

We are submitting our finalized paperwork to the Embassy today.  It is scheduled to arrive by the end of this week.  (Thank you FedEx!)  Hopefully, we will be heading to Uganda soon to get Silas!

So, if you were planning on helping me with my quest to bring books to Pastor Ivan of the church connected to our orphanage, you need to act soon.  I have 9 books lying here on my shelf.  They are very good books.  I am excited to get them to Ivan.  However, I would be far more excited if I were bringing a whole suitcase full of books.

I have not been able to raise any money for logos software, but that might be more of a long term goal.  If you were wanting to help you can still send books to me:

PO Box 159
Cowden, IL 62422

or money to buy books - paypal - kg4mvptb@gmail.com

Thank you very much for your help.

The Sign in the Bathroom

I recently saw this sign at a business that I went to.  Okay, to be honest it was in the bathroom and I'm a little embarrassed that I took a picture in a public bathroom.  I had the door locked so I don't think I broke any state or federal laws.  I'm glad my phone has a camera because I took a picture of it because it is now one of my favorite signs.  (Yes I have favorite signs and no I am not planning on sharing any more in the future.)

Here's what the sign says to me:  "Our only desire is to have a very clean bathroom, therefore, if our bathroom is very clean we are succeeding in business."  If that were 100% true they would hire someone full-time to monitor the cleanliness of the bathroom.  If I were paying to use their bathroom and I had the choice of many bathrooms to use then their business model would work well.  Unfortunately many businesses offer free use of their bathrooms.  This place happens to sell tires and fix cars.  I would rather their SOLE desire be to do their best to put their tires on my car perfectly.  The bathroom is not a make it or break it for me.

Here's what they think the sign says:  "We want you to think that we really, really care about having a clean bathroom.  And since you notice how much we care about this little thing, than you will be impressed with us as a company and continue to bring your business to us."

Here's what the owner of the store thinks the sign says: "We love you as a person and want you to give us all your business and tell all of your friends and family to come here too."

Here's what 99.99999% of the people that use that bathroom think the sign says: "Uhhh....what sign?"

I have no application for this blog.  I just really, really like that sign and I hope that it brings you some enjoyment as well.  (Sidenote - I totally wasted your time didn't I?)

Checking my blog stats too much....and how our adoption continues to change me

I watch the stats of my blog pretty close.  Here are some trends I have identified.

-I have found out that writing about our international adoption spikes the traffic to the blog.

-If it weren't for Facebook and my friends on Facebook, this blog wouldn't get very much traffic at all.

-Other than Facebook, people searching for "breastplate of righteousness" on google account for most of the other traffic that my blog gets.

So I have to assess why I write this blog, right?  Do I write it in order to get people to think about me?  Do I write it to become famous?  Do I write the blog to see my traffic increase?  Although that is tempting, that's not why I write the blog.  I write this blog for the same main reason that I am a Pastor.  I believe by the grace of God I have found the best way to be alive.  Seriously, the best way to be alive.  (Notice I didn't say easiest, happiest, most fun, richest, or any other word.  I chose best on purpose).

I want to spread the worldview of Jesus.  I believe all that Jesus said and did was for the sake of redeeming all of us people.  I don't have that large of an audience, not compared to a lot of other people.  But I can continue to do my best to fill the world that I am a part of with the message and worldview of Jesus.  There are people that I am friends with on Facebook that would probably not attend an evangelical church or even be accepted into many churches.  So it's my hope that my blog finds that person or people.

What makes this so interesting to me is that the stuff that people read on my blog is about my adoption not about my general teaching blogs.  So I guess it's a lot like the old saying, "preach at all times, use words when necessary."  The adoption process that Mindy and I are going through is a real-life experience that many people can relate to.  It's the story of a love between people that have absolutely no reason to be together.  Why would a white middle class evangelical woman be connected to a baby in an east African village?  For no reason other than love.  Why would my three biological children pray every single night and at every mealtime for a boy who lives on the other side of our world?  For no reason other than love.  Why would I think about him almost all day long?  For no other reason than love.

Why did God send His Son into the world to die for your sins so that you can experience eternal life?  No reason other than love.

If you are turned off to the Church in America because of the way people dress, the political views they have, the way they differ from you, or the hypocrisy that is everywhere, than join me in recognizing that Jesus' sacrifice was for no other reason than love.  Let's come together on that point.

The Church may not be all that you want it to be.  You know what - it isn't for me either.  Christians and others claiming to be Christians my not be all you want them to be.

But maybe you read this blog because you like the love story unfolding in our family.  Praise God.  We are not adopting this boy so that you can see the love of God.  We are adopting Him because we love God and we are following His leading in our lives.  This is where He led and this is where we are.  If you see God's love through this, than praise God.  Questions? my email is kg4mvptb@gmail.com.

Changing the Default

I went to a Leadership Conference at Lincoln Christian University this past Saturday with two guys from our church board.  We had a good trip and the main speakers did a great job.  We left with a few ideas for the way our leadership functions at the church.  We left encouraged.  By far the best thing that I heard, and maybe the best thing that I've learned in 2012 is what Dr. James Estep said in his lunch session.

"Education is the process of changing someone's default settings."

I have never heard someone wrap up something so large as education in such a concise manner.  Just plain genius as far as I am concerned.  That sounds a lot like discipleship.  It sounds like following Jesus.  As Christians we are supposed to continually be formed into the image of Christ.  We are to grow to be like Christ.  It is not something that changes quickly.

As we apply this to the Kingdom of Heaven, the metaphor could be a team, an adoption into a family, a marriage, going through boot camp, etc.  In the biggest changes in our lives we have a default setting that needs to be changed.  The army uses bootcamp.  Teams use practice.  In the Kingdom of Heaven we must pray, fast, read the Word, and practice the spiritual disciplines in order to change our default settings.

Changing default settings is incredibly hard.  It requires taking an honest inventory of ourselves.  It requires reading things that we naturally disagree with.  It requires learning something new and improving ourselves.  It requires effort and discipline.

Maybe, as you walk along your path of life it would be a good idea to constantly work on changing your defaults.....I believe that may be called "growth."

The "other" verse

What comes after John 3:16?  Does it even matter?  And why doesn't it get any press at sports events and concerts?

Have I piqued your interest yet?

“I did not come to condemn, but to save.”
Did you know that Jesus said those words to a guy who came to see him at night (any guesses on his name?).  The man didn’t want to come during the day and cause a commotion or become an object of gossip.  That same man witnessed a woman dragged out of a bed, by his friends and companions in broad daylight, in front of many people.  They were not interested in saving her.  They wanted to condemn her for her guilt.  In reality, they were right to do so because she was wrong and she did sin and she knew the penalty for that was death.
They asked Jesus what to do.  Jesus told them to go ahead and stone her...well, the person who has not sinned has the right to kill her....so whoever hasn’t sinned can throw the first stone.
They all left.
“Woman where are your accusers?”
“They all left.”
“Neither do I condemn you.  Go now and leave your life of sin.”

We celebrate John 3:16, but have you read the verse right after it?  To a certain woman John 3:17 is the sweetest verse in the Bible.  And to a certain man it may have been the verse that caused Him to become a follower of Jesus.

I wonder what "other" verse I should write about?  I wonder how many "other" verses have really changed people's lives.

Fill a Suitcase to Build a Library

Me and Ivan
Well I can't quit thinking about Uganda.  I have updated the pictures on my computer, my iPad and my iPhone.  I am still reading the local newspaper The New Vision every morning.  Mindy has been working with our good friends trying to figure out how to get everything done for the adoption.  God has answered so many prayers for us that it's hard to keep them all straight.  But this is not a blog about us...

When we were in Uganda we were picked up by Ivan the Pastor of the church associated with the orphanage that we are working with.  He let me preach.  So we instantly became friends!  I have a lot of respect for Ivan.  He asked me if there were old books that my friends would have that would be good for him and his pastor friends to use for study while they preach and teach the Bible.

I think we can do better than that.  This is a call to all of my friends.  I would like to load a suitcase up with some of the best study guides and study books that we have.  If you would like to donate your favorite study resources to me I will take them to Ivan.  If you would rather send money, you can send it to me through paypal and I can buy the books at cbd.com or amazon.com.  If you send money please let me know what book to get him.  I can't buy books over there and I don't want to just give him cash.  I want to give him a special gift of books from my American friends.

Ivan is a fan of Arsenal (soccer)
Crazy thought - What if we raised enough money in the next couple of weeks to buy him Logos Bible Software and a laptop computer to run it from?  We would need to raise about $3,000 total in the next few weeks.  Would your church want to do that?  That would be hundreds of books and resources for him!

Ivan doesn't just plan on using this for himself either.  His vision is to create a library for himself and other Pastors in that area.  Ivan travels and helps other christian Pastors all over that region.  Just imagine what can happen with some books!

If you want to send money go to our adoption page and click "donate now" on the paypal link.  Please denote that it is for books for Ivan not for our adoption expenses.

If I have to pay to bring another bag - I'll gladly pay it to get our best resources to Ivan!  We are hoping that we will be flying to Uganda within the next two months.  So you have a few weeks to do this if you would like to be a part of filling a suitcase to build a library!

Our little adoption

So, we are adopting a little boy from Uganda.  We were matched with him almost exactly a year ago.  If you don’t know the language, apparently “matching” means that a child has been selected for you to adopt.  We received a picture of him.  Not a very good picture.  It was hard to make him out.  So we got pretty excited and told people that we are expecting to be flying to Uganda soon and to bring him home quickly.  We didn’t enroll the kids in the Upwards sports league and we talked to their teachers to make sure that they could miss time at school and not suffer being held back a grade.  We began to purchase clothes and lots of other items for our trip.  We were ready to fly to Uganda in the middle of February.  Well we had a very hard time getting a court date so we didn’t end up going until August.
We flew out right after Vacation Bible School in the summer of 2011.  All 5 Boyd’s flew 24 hours to get to Uganda.  We spend 4 weeks in Uganda and we lost a lot of weight.  All of us got a bacterial infection.  At one hospital I was told the Eden had typhoid and malaria (she didn’t.)  Will broke his arm.  Our court date was cancelled.  We were there 4 Sundays and only made it to church twice with all the sickness.  It was crazy, wonderful, scary, eye opening, and so many other words.  We grew closer as a family.  We got to meet and spend 4 weeks with Silas.
Our court date got cancelled and we had to fly back to get the kids back in school and I had to get back to work.  We had no idea how long it would be to see the story finish.  A few weeks later Mindy flew back for a 1-2 week stay in which she would complete the adoption and bring him home by the beginning of October 2011.  After 5 weeks and many, many roadblocks we needed Mindy back here.  So she flew home again without Silas.  She was able to be there to celebrate his first birthday.
It is now February 2012 and Silas is not with us.  At this moment Mindy has prepared our case, again, to be presented to bring Silas home.  She has spent a lot of time writing, gathering, talking on the phone, and investigating.  So now we bring all this to the director of the Orphanage.  Then the case will be reviewed within 30 days.  At that time we are hoping to fly out and get him, finally to bring him home to live with us as a member of our family.
This is not an “update on the adoption” blog.  This is a “what I have learned” blog.
We are God’s children.  As my friend Art says, “God doesn’t have great-grandchildren.”  I am a child of God.  You are a child of God.  God loves his children.  We love Silas.  He is not our’s biologically.  He has been very expensive.  It has been a lot of work.  It has been all of my vacation time.  It has been all of Mindy’s free time.  It has meant driving my 99 Saturn for the rest of my life!  He has been a lot of personal sacrifice for our entire family, our extended family, our church family, and many other people.  But mostly it has been a sacrifice for Mindy and me.
So, after all of this sacrifice, do we still love him?  Yes, of course.  Do we love him as much as our biological children?  Yes, of course.  Is he worth the sacrifice?  Yes, and much more.  We ache for that funny little boy.  We imagine him at our dinner table, stealing toys from Willy, and laughing at the kids.  We imagine the mob scene the first time we introduce him to our family at church.  The first time he meets his brand new grandpas and grandmas and cousins, and aunts and uncles.  We can’t wait to get him here.
God worked so hard to adopt us.  God sacrificed so much to adopt us.  God is still in the process of adopting us.  Through all the sacrifice and pain, we love Silas with all of hearts.  Silas may never understand how much work, pain, and sacrifice it was for us to adopt him and that’s just fine.  We don’t care about his appreciation.  We just love him and want to be with him.  We want to take care of him.  We want to teach him about life, people, and God.  We want him to experience his dreams.  We want to nurture him and watch him grow.  We want to love him with everything that we have.
I believe that God simply wants the same for each one of us.  He wants to love us.  He wants to care for us.  He wants us to experience our dreams.  He wants to nurture us.  He wants to watch us grow.
If you think that Mindy and I are great because of our love and sacrifice for Silas, then you should look at God.
This is what is driving me lately.  I want to be an adoption advocate for God.  I want to be an orphanage director for God.  I want people to be placed into the family of God.  When their journey is over I want people to enter into their home of Heaven and not be left out.  In our little church we have had 6 people adopted into God’s family this calendar year.  I want that number to grow.  I want to be an adoption advocate and I want my church to be adoption advocates.  We need to help people get to the Heavenly Father and claim their room in God’s House.
If you have ever doubted God’s love for you...stop.  What more could God do to prove that He loves you?  What more could God do to prove to you that He has plans for you to prosper, find peace, and find wholeness?  What more could God do?  Just like we love Silas, God loves you all-in.  He could not love you more.  Please accept His love.  Don’t block him from your heart.  Don’t hide in shame.  Don’t turn your back on Him out of arrogance.  Open up your heart and let Him in.  Accept the love of God in your life.
